NEOEA Day and Negotiations Conference

NEOEA Day and our annual Negotiations Conference are coming soon — Friday, October 9!

President Rob McFee: Why Ask “Why?”

The year is already underway, and as your NEOEA President, I would like to officially welcome everyone to the 2018-2019 school year. I hope the excitement and energy of August sustains our enthusiasm all year long. Public education is a puzzle of many connected pieces with each place playing a critical role in the life of a child. This responsibility is both awesome and humbling at the same time. I hope you and the students you work with have an incredible, rich, and rewarding experience this year!

I grew up attending public schools in the Willoughby-Eastlake City School District. I graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Secondary Math Education and was fortunate to be hired into the district that I grew up in. My association work began with a simple “ask” from a colleague of mine. I was asked to attend a meeting and get involved. At the time, I wasn’t really sure of why, or even what I was getting into. I clearly had no idea that it would someday lead me to become your NEOEA President and the impact it would have on my life and the lives of so many others.

I encourage you to ask yourself “why?” The question of why I became an educator is complicated with many pieces, but it is one of the most significant stories of my life. It brought me to the next question, “why did I become involved with the association and why is NEOEA such an important part of my life?” Each and every one of us may have different answers to these questions, and often the answers are evolving. I believe the answer to “WHY” is behind the decisions and actions we take every day and makes us who we are.

Why NEOEA? I believe that a job as significant as the education of our youth cannot be accomplished by any one individual working in a vacuum. Working with others, capitalizing on their strengths, and collaborating solutions together towards a common goal produces a more comprehensive and powerful result that is vital for all of our communities. This is the heart and soul of NEOEA! We provide opportunity for dialogue and collaboration with like-minded educators across North Eastern Ohio. We challenge ourselves to look for ways to better serve the students we work with in our great public schools! NEOEA works with you to provide the tools you need to succeed and equips your local leaders with the information they need to advocate for both you and your students.

NEOEA has many different opportunities that can be accessed through our website and through the News and Views publications which you will be receiving throughout this school year. If you have been attending events with us in the past, GREAT! I hope to see you there again this year and that you continue to find the events meaningful and relevant to the success of public education. But I ask you at the same time to consider asking someone new to come with you and to share that experience for the first time. This incredible network of support grows stronger each time someone new attends one of our events. You are NEOEA!

You never know what that simple ask may lead to!

United we are stronger,
